Writing

At Martinshaw Primary School we aim for children to be independent writers. We teach them to use punctuation and grammar accurately, to be able to proofread their own work and make amendments and improvements to it. Teachers encourage children to write clearly and with confidence in any given genre. We strongly promote good presentation of work through all subjects and express the importance of neat handwriting and correct letter formation. We want our children to feel proud of their accomplishments and create writing they can be proud of.

Through our English curriculum, we aim to nurture in the children a love of literature and language and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives.  We focus on the teaching and learning of spelling and handwriting and give children the knowledge of how to structure their writing and the confidence to write across a range of genres.

We ensure that pupils are taught how to plan, edit and evaluate their writing.  We structure our teaching and build upon each year group so that the children develop the skills for writing down ideas fluently. The know the relationship between sound and letter correspondence, understand word structure and how to segment to spell.

The aim of this writing curriculum is to promote the highest standards of language and literacy by equipping children with a strong command of the spoken and written word and to develop their love of literature.

We aim for children to be able to:

• articulate and communicate their ideas and then to organise them coherently. This requires clarity, awareness of the audience, purpose and context, and an increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.
• write using a fluent, legible and eventually, speedy handwriting style.
• acquire a wide vocabulary and understanding of grammar
• appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage, including key authors
